Overview

Controls that survive ten years of family use, not just the first install week.

Wired & wireless Per-room zoning Voice integration Open ecosystems Schedule design included

Smart heating controls are only as useful as the way they are configured. Most underperformance we see isn't about which controller someone bought, it's about whether the zoning, scheduling, and weather compensation were ever set up to match how the family actually lives. We design, install, and configure controls so the system does the thinking, not the homeowner.

We work primarily with Heatmiser Neo, Hive, Tado, Nest, Honeywell Evohome, and Loxone for higher-end automation. We deliberately avoid closed proprietary controllers with poor UK service paths, when something goes wrong in year four, you want a controller you can still buy parts for.

If you are installing a new heating system, upgrading from old radiator stats, retrofitting smart control to existing UFH, or finally tired of fiddling with an app every week, this is straightforward work for us. We will install, configure, train you, and leave you with a system that runs itself in the background.

The Cost of Getting It Wrong

The hardware is rarely the problem.

We are called out to 'smart heating' faults every week. Maybe 1 in 10 is actually a hardware fault. The rest are configuration, ecosystem confusion, account ownership issues, or schedules that were never matched to the way the family actually uses the house.

Pay for comfort you never feel

Whole-house schedules instead of per-room schedules mean you pay to heat empty bedrooms during dinner and a cold kitchen at breakfast.

Smart system the family bypasses

An app nobody can drive becomes a £400 manual override. Within a month the family has reverted to a default that does nothing helpful.

Orphaned ecosystem

Controllers tied to a discontinued cloud service or a previous homeowner's account become bricks. We see this monthly with closed proprietary systems.

Smart control mistakes we see weekly.

  • 01

Installing controllers without ever measuring the difference between zones, paying for 'smart' that runs as one big dumb zone.

  • 02

Buying ecosystem-locked controllers (HomeKit-only, Alexa-only) that future homeowners can't transfer ownership of.

  • 03

Schedules set up by the installer in a generic 'morning/evening' pattern and never adjusted to the actual family pattern.

  • 04

Weather compensation curves left on factory default, the single biggest energy waste in a modern heating system.

  • 05

Smart thermostats mounted in the worst-possible room (next to a south-facing window, above a radiator, by the front door), overriding every other zone's intelligence.

Our Process

A meticulous, no-mess method.

Every project is handled by the same engineers, from first survey through final commissioning, and we're the team you'll call for service for the lifetime of the system.

01

Lifestyle interview

How does the family actually use the house? What time do you leave, return, sleep, work from home, host? Schedules are designed from real patterns, not assumptions.

02

Ecosystem decision

We recommend the right controller for your existing tech (Alexa/Google/HomeKit), heating system, and the future-proofing you want. No upsell on what you don't need.

03

Install & wiring

Wired or wireless thermostats per zone, central wiring centre, manifold actuators paired and addressed, control hub configured.

04

Configuration & schedules

Per-room schedules, geofencing, weather compensation, holiday mode, app accounts in your name. We set it up; you don't have to learn the manual.

05

Training & 30-day adjust

Hands-on training for the household. Free remote re-tune at 30 days once you've lived with it for a month, most schedules need a small adjust.

What You Gain

Measurable outcomes, not vague promises.

Per-room comfort

Bedrooms warm at bedtime, bathrooms warm 20 minutes before the alarm, kitchen warm at breakfast, without you touching anything.

10–25% lower running cost

Proper zoning plus weather compensation typically saves 10–25% versus a whole-house thermostat, pays for itself within 2 winters.

Voice & app where wanted

Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home integration where you want it. Or no app at all if you prefer the thermostat on the wall.

Open ecosystems only

Controllers that survive ecosystem changes, account changes, and a future house sale. No proprietary lock-in.

Schedules in your name

App accounts created in your name and email. No installer holding the master account. Ownership is yours from day one.

Future-proof for ASHP

Controls specified to support OpenTherm, 0–10 V, and weather compensation, ready for the heat-pump upgrade now or later.

Technical Detail

Controller options, integrations, and which one fits your house.

There is no universally 'best' smart heating controller, only the right one for your heating system, your tech stack, and how much complexity you want. Here is how we actually choose.

Heatmiser Neo (default for UFH)

Best balance of UFH-specific features, reliable wired or wireless thermostats, robust app, and excellent UK service path. Works with any wet system, supports OpenTherm to most modern boilers and ASHPs, integrates with Alexa, Google, IFTTT.

Hive (good for retrofit, family-friendly)

Family-friendly app, multi-zone radiator and UFH support, broad integration. Cloud-dependent, fine for most households, less appropriate for self-sufficient or rural properties with patchy broadband.

Tado (efficiency-focused)

Strong weather-compensation algorithms, geofencing, and open-window detection. Works well on existing radiator systems being smart-upgraded. Subscription tier exists for advanced features.

Loxone (premium / new-build)

Full home automation including heating, lighting, blinds, security. Right answer for higher-end new builds where the heating control is one part of a wider system. Requires specialist install, we are Loxone authorised.

Honeywell Evohome (legacy excellence)

Robust, long-life, excellent zoning on radiator-heated homes. Still our recommendation for retrofit smart control on rad-only properties.

Voice & home automation

Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, IFTTT integrations configured per controller. We avoid 'voice-only' or 'HomeKit-only' lock-ins. Heating must work without the cloud, voice is the bonus, not the dependency.

FAQs

Honest answers, on the record.

The questions Cheshire homeowners and contractors ask us most before a job. If yours isn't here, call 0161 531 1141, we'll answer it plainly.

How much does smart zonal control cost?+

Per-zone retrofit on existing UFH: typically £180–£280 per zone installed and configured. Full whole-house smart upgrade: £900–£2,500 depending on zone count, hub, and integration scope.

Will it work with my existing heating?+

Almost always yes. We support all wet heating (boiler, ASHP, biomass, hybrid) and most radiator and UFH systems. Heat pumps benefit most from proper smart controls.

Can I use Alexa or Google?+

Yes, we configure Alexa, Google Home, Apple Home, and IFTTT routines as part of the install. Voice control is included where the controller supports it.

What if my broadband goes down?+

Heating still works. Local schedules and thermostat overrides function offline. App control and remote adjustment resume when broadband returns.

How much will it save me?+

Typical savings 10–25% versus a single-zone thermostat. Bigger houses with under-utilised rooms save more. Heat-pump homes save more again because of weather compensation.

Can you transfer ownership when I sell the house?+

Yes, and we choose controllers specifically so this is straightforward. Account ownership transfers, the system stays with the property.

Do I need a hub on the wall?+

Most modern systems use a small hub mounted in the wiring centre or cupboard, not visible. Thermostats themselves are wall-mounted in each zone (small, neutral, low-profile).

What's the warranty?+

2-year warranty on the controls install. Manufacturer warranty on hardware (typically 2–5 years depending on brand). We are the service path.

Can I install it myself?+

You can buy retail kits and self-install single thermostats. We install when you want multi-zone integration, wiring centre work, controls paired to UFH manifolds, or anything tied to a heat pump.

Your Next Step
